"Kathleen Bartholomew is one of the most dynamic and knowledgeable speakers on the state of nursing care I have heard. Her insight into nurse-to-nurse bullying and how use of how use of current technology, ie. cell phones, negatively impact delivery of safe patient care resonates with nurses today - especially those in leadership roles. Her wisdom on what we, as nurses can and should do to promote the profession for our patients is not to be missed"

Dartmouth-Hitchcock

September, 2017

"This past May, the Center for Nursing Excellence at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (D-H), held our second annual conference on nursing leadership. This year, our theme was “cultivating the leader within.” We were fortunate to host, as our keynote speaker, Kathleen Bartholomew, RN. We invited Kathleen back to D-H after hosting her several years ago at a similar conference that was focused on nurse to nurse communication and bullying. Her evaluations from the learners were outstanding, and based on that feedback, we chose to feature her again at this most recent program.

This year, she discussed topics from her most recent book: The Dauntless Nurse. In two separate sessions, she examined “Leading from Within: What you don’t see” focusing on culture, power and perception. In her second session, she addressed “What you do see” focusing on nurse to nurse hostility. As with her past workshop, participants rated her highly for her expertise, content and overall delivery. Her presentation style fully engaged the audience and the education she provided was extremely valuable to those present.

Kathleen’s expertise in the field of peer to peer relationships, communication and leadership is extraordinary. The material she presents is always relevant to nurses – not only to those in formal leadership positions but to all nurses, including nurses who practice at the point of care. She offers practical tools that assist learners in taking communication to the next level. Participants in her programs enjoy the balance she provides between factual, evidence based information and imaginative, holistic-based content to provide left/right brain integration. Her nursing background provides the foundation that allows Kathleen to relate education to real, every day experiences using storytelling to fully engage the learner in the concepts being presented and discussed.

Kathleen Bartholomew is a high energy and engaged presenter. Her interactive teaching style ensures that learners are actively involved in the education and highly motivated to learn. For this reason, I am happy to give her my highest recommendation."

Veterans Administration of Northern California

September, 2016 Unit based sessions
"Just today a couple staff came to me to inform me that they handle issues on their own, without involving me, because they are "grownups" now! We laughed! An RN who has been known to be crucial and frequently cite "short staffing" has been going out of her way- noticeably so- to encourage and support the team. (And) several staff were heard saying, "I saw that eye roll" or "Was that a sigh?
...when an LVN was loud and 'having a breakdown' the RN sought her out and complimented her for being a team player and then asked if she needed a break. OMG! The entire staff saw this work wonders. They are floored. The entire mood lifted, like a fog!
Thank you SO much for getting Kathleen here. This is in my opinion the best thing that has been done for nursing staff and team building in my ENTIRE career! And I graduated and started my career in 1984. "

"The comments about your sessions were by far the most positive and sincere of all. Everyone had more than one insightful takeaway from their session with you... I was so happy that we were fortunate to have you participate in the Symposium, but the best part was finding out that you are an awesome communicator with such a great ability to teach these wonderful nurses and administrators very, very valuable (and much needed) lessons. Each attendee I spoke to expressed how much it meant for them to be reminded of why they do what they do and to feel appreciated. So thank you for that Kathleen!"

"Our evaluations gave your presentation the highest ratings and every person attending left in amazement at how you were able to clarify what was realty amongst relationships with their colleagues and staff, faculty and students. They especially notes your knowledge of, enthusiasm for and passion about the subject matter and the enduring lessons and 'Aha' moments that came from the exceptional stories and videos. Your day with us is one of the best workshops any of the participants had attended. What you taught us opened up dialogue that has been long overdue... Your presentation was truly exceptional and has started a very positive change in the environment in which we practice."

On behalf of the New Mexico VA Healthcare System, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your inspiring seminar “Revolutionary Pathways to Safety and Quality in a Fallible Human System” presented on May 10, 2010. We have had outstanding feedback from our staff members. They found the presentations thought-provoking and very applicable to their various situations. They especially liked the common-sense approach you identified for building a culture of healthy relationships and for decreasing horizontal hostility in the workplace.
We highly recommend your seminar to organizations interested in building a dynamic culture of safety. The Education Service from the New Mexico VA Health Care System is already looking forward to your coming back.
Once again, thank you for a relevant and energizing presentation.

Our nurses attended your presentation for Ministry Health Care in Wisconsin this week and were most impressed. We have a large, hard-working department facing some of the issues you described. They provided me with a copy of your powerpoint, stating that this presentation made a difference for them, and I thought you would appreciate knowing that.

RE: JOHN NANCE AND KATHLEEN BARTHOLOMEW
John Nance and Kathleen Bartholomew all day workshop to nurses and physicians, June 2010
“Of all the National and International speakers that we could have chose to come to our organization, our choice was Kathleen and John. They bring two different perspectives which blend together to create realistic situations that physicians, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, clinical educators, social workers, human resource staff and others can relate to in their own environments. Kathleen and John provide real life examples and experiences that inspire hope and courage that each of us can speak up to help create and sustain a culture of safety within our own units and departments for our patients and community. We continue on as an organization committed to a culture of safety for our patients, staff, physicians and community. Kathleen and John created synergy, conversation and momentum to keep us moving forward.”

What a wonderful experience…having you visit Youngtown/Warren!!! We truly appreciated your efforts and found you to be an exceptional resource.  You were stimulating, and helpful as you presented your stories, offered your insights, and suggested direction for moving our nursing culture out of oppression and ‘torment’. The evaluations clearly indicate that your visit was an exhilarating and positive experience for all.”

“Your presentation absolutely hit home for us.  I was so happy to see so many nurses and nurse leaders able to attend the sessions – and you have received overwhelmingly rave reviews!  The evaluations have been 100% positive.  One (nurse) went back to her unit the next day and shared with her manager that she would work with Dr. ___ (A difficult customer at best) differently – now that she had some new strategies.  Another wrote, “I won’t be a silent witness any more.” Powerful work. Thank you.

“I don’t know if you get much in the way of follow-up from groups you present to, but I thought I would write and let you know that we are continuing to hear from staff about the impacts of how we treat each other.  As an organization, one individual was fired because of the aggressive and hostile behaviors they continued to display toward coworkers and the impact they had on their department.  We are also using your material in our Patient Care Orientation.  Your presentation opened dialogue in many of the departments where it was hush-hush before.”

“…Anyway, I could go on and on because I value(d) your presentation so much…it is very timely for us at our program as we are “growing” from classes of 40 per semester to 80... As a result of your presentation in Visalia I have had many wonderful discussions with student RNs (mostly second and fourth semester in our A.D.N. program) as well as RNs who could not attend. It is interesting isn’t it, as soon as you bring up the topic SOMEONE has a story to tell.”

“Thank you so much for speaking at our Mel Evans conference.  Your talk was passionate & timely.  Since you left there has been open discussions within units regarding behavior.  Thanks for enlightening us…”
